Dry, red eyes can make everyday activities uncomfortable. You may notice burning, itching, watering, a gritty sensation, or blurry vision that comes and goes. While occasional irritation can happen to anyone, persistent dry and red eyes may be a sign of dry eye disease or another condition affecting the surface of your eyes. At Northside Vision, we evaluate what is causing your symptoms so we can recommend treatment based on your specific needs.
Healthy tears require the right balance of water, oil, and other components to keep the eyes comfortable and protected. Dry eye symptoms can develop when your eyes do not produce enough tears or when the tears evaporate too quickly.
Meibomian gland dysfunction, or MGD, is a common contributor to evaporative dry eye. The meibomian glands along the eyelids produce oils that help prevent tears from evaporating. When these glands become blocked or inflamed, the tear film can become unstable, leading to dryness and irritation.
Other factors that may contribute to dry, red eyes include:
• Extended computer and digital device use
• Dry, windy, smoky, or heated environments
• Contact lens wear
• Seasonal allergies
• Certain medications
• Eyelid inflammation
• Changes in tear production with age
Because several conditions can cause similar symptoms, an eye examination can help determine what is actually contributing to your discomfort.
It may seem unusual for dry eyes to cause excessive watering, but this is a common symptom. When the surface of the eye becomes irritated, the eyes may produce reflex tears in response. These watery tears do not always contain the balanced oils needed to properly lubricate the eye, so you can experience watering and dryness at the same time.
Temporary relief from artificial tears or warm compresses may be helpful for some patients, but recurring symptoms can require a closer look at the underlying cause.
At Northside Vision, we specialize in diagnosing and managing dry eye disease and meibomian gland dysfunction. Depending on your condition, we may recommend at-home care, topical treatments, or advanced in-office therapies.
One option is Intense Pulsed Light, or IPL, which uses controlled light energy around the eyes to help manage inflammation associated with MGD and dry eye disease. We also offer TearCare, a treatment that applies controlled heat directly to the eyelids to help soften blocked oils within the meibomian glands. Eyelid cleaning with micro-blepharo-exfoliation may also be recommended when buildup along the eyelids is contributing to irritation.
If your eyes remain dry, red, scratchy, burning, or watery despite using over-the-counter products, it may be time for a professional dry eye evaluation. Identifying the cause early can help us create a more targeted plan for managing your symptoms and protecting the ocular surface.
